This story is newsworthy because it has timeliness, impact, prominence and human interest. It has timeliness because the story broke on Sunday. It has impact because of the potential impact not only on citizens of the UK, for whom postal and export restrictions will most likely be tightened again, but also for the world because they are arming a potential threat. It has prominence because it has to do with the government and a country of interest. It has human interest because this could be considered a scandal because of the persons mentioned in the article (The Guardian, 04/20/08).
The article I found most interesting was an international news item about the fear of the Afghan government slowly shifting back into Taliban-style policy. The parliament is considering banning females wearing make-up, men's jeans, long hair for either gender and couples speaking in public. The law proposal is part of a country wide push for more Islamic values in Afghanistan. I find this interesting because it shows the differences in cultural and religious norms of the world. These contrabands, while seeming outrageous to us, were once how life was in countries like Afghanistan. It is also interesting to see the country's disgusted reaction to the idea of these new policies after working so hard to earn them (The Guardian, 04/24/08)
