A gunman opened fire in a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University killing five people and injuring several others. It was originally reported that 18 people had been wounded in the shooting. Campus Police Chief Donald Grady said the gunman wasn't a student at the university. All classes were canceled and the campus was closed for the day. The school had closed one day in December because of threats and references to the Virginia Tech shooting made on a dormitory bathroom wall.

This story is important because it has impact. Many people in the United States are enrolled in a college or have a child that's in college. It also has prominence because it is another school shooting. This story has proximity to me because I am a college student. It is also a human interest story because an education institution should be a safe place, yet this is another incident to add to the tragedies in the past few years. (Newsday, 2/15/08, A5)

The most interesting story this week is Fidel Castro retiring from ruling Cuba. This is a huge change in politics because it changes the status of Cuban ruling. Castro has appointed his younger brother Raul Castro to be his successor. This story has timeliness because this is breaking news. This story is also a prominence story because so many people have fled Cuba to the United States. It also is a human interest story because of the tension between Cuba and the United States for the past 50 years. (Newsday, 2/20/08, A7)
