Mariel Leibowitz, 2/21/2008

Tuesday, February 19th, marked the date for Sen. Barack Obama’s ninth straight win over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Sen. Obama won the Midwestern industrial state by gaining votes from women and white lower and middle-income workers, who were once faithful to Sen. Clinton. With the upcoming primaries in Texas and Ohio on March 4th, Clinton will need to win over these states in order to redeem her standings.
Statistics reported by 77 percent of precincts in Wisconsin stated that Obama led with 58 percent while Clinton trailed behind with 41 percent of votes.
Obama is expected to win over Hawaii which will take him into the double digits for a tenth straight win. (Newsday, 2/20/2008, p. A2)
In a time where our economy is in a recession, who can better fix the country than the person leading it? With that being said, I chose the story about the election because considering the state that our economy is in, it is important to keep up with politics and see who will be taking over our country.
The proximity element can be found in this story because although the story does not directly talk about New York, the outcome of the events occurring in the article will indirectly affect us eventually. The prominence element is included due to the high level of important the story carries. The main element, in my opinion, is impact. The result of the events in this article determines history. Lastly, the element of time is also in this story because the content pertains to current issues.
The story about high gas prices is the most important to me this week. On February 19th, the cost of an oil barrel was $100.10. Owning a car myself, this article affects me due to the fact that gasoline prices will once again, rise. The article is about the prices in New York which is an example of the proximity element. The time element is there since it’s talking about an issue that happened this past Tuesday. Also, there is the impact element explaining how I and other users of gasoline will be affected.
