A shooting occurred at Northern Illinois University on Tuesday, February 19. The gunman, dressed in black, started firing in a lecture hall while class was in session. 17 people were injored and five people were killed by the gunman who then turned the gun on himself on the stage amongst the pandemonium. All classes were cancelled for the rest of the day and the following day as well. Classes were also cancelled earlier in the year in December due to threats found hinting to the possibility of a school shooting. This shooting at Northern Illinois University was the fourth shooting in the United States this week.
This story has relevance because school shootings are becoming out of hand in the U.S. alone. It has a large impact on the American people (primarily college students) because it reiterates the danger on college campuses. At Hofstra, alone, there have been alert televisions installed into every housing facility on campus (Newsday, 2/15/08, p. A5). The story I found interesting was the resignation of Fidel Castro, the dictator of Cuba, on Tuesday February, 19 2008. Castro dictated Cuba for nearly 50 years. It has been of great interest and holds great impact on the American people who remember Cuba as a popular vacation destintion (Newsday, 2/20/08).
Wisconsin Primarie results (Newsday, 2/20/08, p.A22). Fidel Castro resigned (Newsday, 2/20/08, p.A6-A7). Hillary Clinton's Campaign accused Barack Oboma of plagiarizing a speech from a Massachusetts govenor (Newsday, 2/18/08). McCain aides told Lobbyist: Go away (Newsday, 2/21/08,p.A6-A7). Ex Duke players to file lawsuit (Newsday, 2/21/08, p.A15). Wrong body released to burial in W.Va (Newsday, 2/21/08).
