A confident John McCain who significantly won in the GOP presidential primary in Wisconsin is confident that he will be the Republican Party’s nominee. “I will be our party’s nominee for president of the United States,” McCain exclaimed to a crowd in Columbus, Ohio. Although McCain has a strong lead over Mike Huckabee, he will continue to stay in the race until McCain’s spot as the Republican Party’s nominee is clinched. The next stop for McCain and Huckabee will be Texas and Ohio. McCain ended his speech last night with insults to Barack Obama, who has won nine straight victories in a row. McCain knows that he is not the youngest candidate, but feels that he is the “most experienced.”

One element of news that this story contains is timeliness. Timeliness is shown in this story because it is happening now. John McCain is taking a huge lead in the Republican Party and will most likely be a nominee for president. Another element of news that is also shown in this story is proximity. Proximity is used in this story because whoever the Republican Party nominee will be, it is affecting and influencing the United States everyday. Lastly, this story contains human interest. It seems as though the 2008 election has gained un-divided attention of so many United States citizens because everyone clearly wants a change. As citizens of this country, we are very interested in every of aspect of this upcoming election (Newsday, 2/20/08. P.a22).

My personal favorite story of the week is the New Jersey Nets remarkable trade sending all-star point guard Jason Kidd to the Dallas Mavericks. Kidd, who completely turned around the New Jersey Nets franchise, was shipped off to the Mavericks in an eight-player deal. It makes sense as to why the New Jersey wanted to complete this trade because a team who will soon be relocating to Brooklyn needs to rebuild as much as possible. Being a New Jersey Nets fan, I am saddened that the run is over, but I understand that the team is in a rebuild mode and is doing what is best for the future. Kidd, who began his career in Dallas playing his first two seasons with the Mavericks will now have a better chance in winning a championship with a much stronger and deeper team. Hopefully for Kidd, his dream of winning a championship can be accomplished (Newsday, 2/19/08).

NBA All-Star point guard Jason Kidd was sent back to the Dallas Mavericks in a blockbuster trade involving eight players (Newsday, 2/19/08)…Hillary Clinton and her campaign accused Barack Obama of plagiarizing a speech from a Massachusetts governor (Newsday, 2/18/08)…Laura Bush is not worried about George Bush’s unclear program concerning AIDS in Africa (Newsday, 2/17/08)…Some well known American Musicians have sued Universal Music Group Incorporation for more than $6 million dollars because of issues concerning royalties (Newsday, 2/16/08)…At Northern Illinois University, a former student with handguns killed five students in a lecture hall (Newsday 2/15/08)…A leader in al-Quida in Iraq has threatened Jerusalem, Israel (Newsday, 2/14/08).
