All eyes are on china as the Olympic torch relays its way around the world. After losing to China for the chance to host the 2008 Summer Olympics, those who bid for Toronto to be the location this summer are saying “I told you so.” John Bitove, Toronto’s 2008 bid leader had no comment in relation to the torch relay or the situation with China in general. There have been global protests in relation to China. Along with the honor of being able to host the Olympics, China had to make some promises to the world that as of now seem as though they are not being kept. The Chinese promised to improve on human rights, help to improve the environment, and help the promotion of world piece. Bob Richardson, chief operating officer of the 2008 bid mentioned that they still need to work on all three promises before the opening ceremonies are held.
This story contains many of the elements of news. The Olympics are an epic event for many athletes and are something for which they train themselves for years. The Olympics is an event that is known world wide and therefore everyone is looking to China to see what is going to happen next. (4/10/08 Front Section)
The story that I found most interesting was that in the fall Nova Scotia liquor stores will no longer use plastic bags. Ontario likes the idea and is thinking of using the same idea as Nova Scotia, the leader in Canadian recycling. Ontario believes that by stopping the use of plastic bags in liquor stores it will reduce the amount of plastic bags by 10 million. The environment is an issue that is becoming more important in our day and age. (4/10/08 Front Section)
