Jamie Atkinson - 4/14/08

Amid a week of Stanley Cup fever and Red Sox-Yankee mania, Canadians showed recognition of six of their Olympians by inducting them into the Canadian Hall of Fame. The six gold medalists, whose events range from speed skating to women's hockey, all responded with honor to their new titles. When they were questioned about the controversy over the Beijing Olympics, former Olympiad Barbara Ann Scott responded that she felt it was a shame to rob these athletes of their chance to shine.

This article shows several newsworthy qualities. It is timely because they were recently inducted into the Hall of Fame. It is also prominent because they are public figures that, while maybe not well known inside the United States, could be very well known in Canada. It has proximity because the story is being ran in an Toronto newspaper. It has human interest because it is recreational and could also invoke the nostalgia of watching their nation win (The Toronto Star, 04/13/08).

The most interesting article was the one about Jackie Robinson's anniversary of breaking the color barrier in baseball. As a baseball fan, every year I watch players of every team take the field wearing the same number in honor of Jackie Robinson. The article continued on to discuss the advancements in racial equality in baseball. I liked the article not only because it was about a sport I am interested, but because it celebrates an important event not only for equal rights but for baseball. I also liked that the article did not only focus on one minority, but also included the rising amounts of Latin American players all across the league. (The Toronto Star, 04/14/08).
