New York, Gov. Elliot Spitzer has resigned from his position on Wednesday March 12, 2008. With wife Silda behind him, Spitzer gave a two-and-a-half minute speech discussing his apology to the public. “I am deeply sorry that I did not live to what was expected of me,” Spitzer said to a crowd full of reporters at his office in Manhattan. Elliot Spitzer has resigned as governor of New York because he has been accused of spending $80,000 on prostitutes. Silda Spitzer did not say a word when reporters asked her questions and appeared sad behind her husband. Spitzer will be replaced by Lt. Gov David Paterson. Paterson will be New York’s first black governor. As Spitzer concluded the address, he abruptly walked away, and dodged questions from reporters. Spitzer is the first governor to quit because of scandal in New York’s history.
This story contains timeliness because the resignation of Gov. Elliot Spitzer has just happened now. With many reporters covering this story, the public has been informed of the many up to date events that keep happening with Spitzer. Another element of news that this story contains is human interest. It seems as though everyone is talking about this story and has gained so much attention by many people across the world. Lastly, there is conflict shown in this story because there are many clashing opinions as to whether or not Gov. Spitzer should have resigned (The Star-Ledger, 3/12/08).
My favorite story of the week was the city of New Brunswick, New Jersey’s plans for restoring the city that is decaying by using the arts. Mayor John Jim Cahill is interested in expanding the New Brunswick Cultural Center, which will be a $275 million dollar project. The new building will feature statte-of-the-art theaters, classrooms, and rehearsal studios. This story is interesting and intriguing because the city of New Brunswick wants to develop through the arts and become more cultural. It is also interesting that the arts is getting a lot of credit because the city is investing so much money in this potential project (The Star-Ledger, 3/12/08).
