Adrian Jones- 2/14/08

The Presidential election race between Senators Hiliary Clinton and Barack Obama is getting more intense than any other election before. With Clinton winning California, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York, Obama is not too far behind taking Connecticut, Georgia, Minnesota and Illinois. Although the idea of nominating a woman or an African-American to lead our country seems like a good beginning, they still have a bit of a struggle with Republican McCain working his way up for nominations.

This story is important because it contains one of the key elements of news which is proximity. The article speaks about an election that could make history. Because of the fact that the United States is a diverse country, the idea of a woman or African-American becoming our next President can have a huge affect on the lives of America. Timeliness is another element because it is important to keep up with important facts and events. Impact also plays a role because who ever gets elected President will affect our future. (The New York Times, 2/6/08), p.A1)

There was a story that spoke about the study of diabetes. Researchers had believed that if people with diabetes lowered their blood sugar to normal levels, they would have a lower risk of dying from heart disease. But researchers have found that more than 10,000 middle-aged and older people with Type 2 diabetes are at higher risk of death when lowering their blood sugar. Randomly assigned particpants went under the study for an average of four years when researchers discovered that there were 54 more deaths than in the group with less maintained sugar levels. I was shocked after reading this story because I feel like it is not fair to the families of those with diabetes who died believing in their chances of low risk deaths. Its like the study focused on the exact opposite of what it was supposed to be doing. The elements of timeliness, proximity and impact are shown in this story because it affects the readers of this article who may have diabetes themselves or know someone who does. It can also serve as a warning sign to those who considered lowering their blood sugar without consulting their doctors. (The New York Times, 2/7/08, p.A1)
