Adrian Jones - 2/7/08

Police offiicials of some Long Island areas urge residents to be aware of the GPS system thefts. Car owners from Nassau County, Levittown, Baldwin and the five boroughs are being striped of their GPS systems right out of their vehicles. According to police reports, there has been 211 reports of GPS theft last month compared 44 reports in January of last year. It is not for certain that the thefts are being committed by the same people but warning letters to the communities are being sent to further spread the word.

This article is not as entertaining as the Superbowl XLII champions, the NY Giants, or the 2008 election; but rather very important in concerns of safety in our communities. Proximity was the key element in this article considering the thefts are taking place in our neighbor town, Nassau County. Human interest is also important, because car owners who keep vehicles out on their driveway would feel the devastation of having to keep a close eye on their property. Service is also included, the thefts could be occuring in other areas besides New York. It is important that everyone in their communities be aware of their surroundings as well as their vehicles. The article that most interested me in the paper was about a woman who performed a scam on adoption agencies. A 27 year old woman from Long Island, NY, scanned newspapers ads, Internet, telephone books and adoption agencies promising to hand over her babies in return for living expenses. It amazes me to see how people in this world stoop so low in their character for money. This woman exposed her children to hopeful families just so she could buy her lattes from Starbucks and sneakers from Wal-Mart. Quite frankly, I was a bit disgusted with this woman and I felt a sense of joy and relief when I read she was sent to prison.
