The results for "Super Tuesday" in New York are in. For the Republican party, John McCain defeated Mitt Romney to claim all of the 101 Republican delegates. Hillary Clinton narrowly beat out Barack Obama for the 232 Democratic delegates. Clinton had 57 percent of the vote to Obama's 40 percent. McCain had 51 percent of the Republican vote, while Romney recieved 28 percent. McCain had the backing of the former New York City Mayor, Rudy Giuliani. Clinton had competition in her adopted state with Obama in heavily black neighborhoods in New York City, liberal upstate areas and on college campuses.
The results of "Super Tuesday" are important because it is part of determining who will be our next President. This story has prominence because it was the biggest story of the week and it is a very important event in this country. This story also has proximity because it affects New York and in the larger picture, the United States. Impact is another factor because it has an outcome that people will respond to. Also, it is a human interest piece because it is breaking historical records with a woman and a black man vying for the Democratic spot. Timeliness is a component too because "Super Tuesday" determines the candidates. (Newsday, 2/6/08)
My favorite story this week is the New York Giants defeating the New England Patriots in the Superbowl this Sunday. The Giants were expected to lose to the Patriots then undefeated record of 18-0. This story was my favorite because it shows nothing is predictable. The game was football's version of "David and Goliath" with viewers tuning in to find out who would come out on top. The Giants winning the Superbowl gave New York sports' teams their win this year. (Newsday, 2/4/08)
