Tuesday, February 6, 2008 marked the biggest primary election day with 24 states across the United States participating. Results were flowing in and changing with every passing minute. For the Republican Party, Senator John McCain is still the front-runner with 198 delegates out of the 1,191 needed to secure the nomination. However, Mitt Romney trailed close behind in second and Mike Huckabee proved to be stronger in the southern states. On the Democratic Party side, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both scored important victories but remained in a close tie. A big upset for Obama was Clinton’s victory in Massachusetts, the state where both senators and its governor endorsed Obama. Analysts say even after all the primary results are in, it will be too close to call the nomination for the Democratic Party.

People came out in record numbers to vote in this year’s Super Tuesday primary elections. The 2008 presidential is sure to be historical with the top contenders for the Democratic nominee being an African American male and a female. The stakes were high and yet with each win for Senators Obama and Clinton, no one person became a clear winner. It may not be until the announcement at the Democratic National Convention in August that the nominee is chosen. Though John McCain remains the top contender for the Republicans, don’t count out Romney or Huckabee who have strong support in several states. Until then upcoming primaries in the next month will be important factors in the race for president. (Newsday, 2/6/08, p. A4 and A5)

The best story of the past week was about a photograph that helped to solve a 16-year-old missing person’s mystery. The photo was found with the body of a man who drowned in upstate Somers, New York. The case was recently revived when an investigator sent the photo around to western Massachusetts where someone identified the building in the background. The story was intriguing because after 16 years the case was finally put to rest. Because of a photograph that was preserved after being underwater, the man’s family finally has answers about his untimely demise. (Newsday, 2/1/08, p. A5)
