Amanda Aguiar - 3/6/08

After claiming victory in the Ohio and Rhode Island primaries Tuesday, Hillary Rodham Clinton made her way back into the delegate race. Prior to these wins, after a series of 11 straight loses, Texas and Ohio were considered must wins for her campaign. Texas and Vermont also held caucuses Tuesday, but it was too close to declare a winner in Texas late Tuesday night and Obama took Vermont with ease. Though these two wins put an end to Clinton's 29-day losing streak, they will do little to stop Obama's momentum, as he remains the leader among delegates.

The 2008 election has been said to be the most important election in American history. Both proximity and timeliness are key elements in this story. People all over the country are interested in the results of these primaries because they will in turn determine who the presidential nominees for the 2008 election will be. With John McCain winning the Republican nomination for Presidency, Americans are curious to see which candidate will become the Democratic nominee. In such a close race, the timing of Clinton's wins in the Ohio and Rhode Island primaries is significant to this story. Although Clinton started the race out strong, in recent weeks, she had been falling behind her competition, Barack Obama. Had she not won Tuesday, she would have been out of the race to the White House. (Newsday 3/5/08, p. A4)

Last week, Donald Trump announced his plan to build a catering hall and restaurant on the boardwalk at Jones Beach. Tuesday night his plans for Trump on the Ocean were rejected by a state review board. The state decision required Trump to get a variance for the basement; however Trump's attorney reported that the developer would sue the state because of their decision. Since Trump wants his proposed catering hall and restaurant to be built at Jones Beach, it affects Long Island and therefore, proximity is significant to this story. People who live on the island want to have a say in what is going on around them. Personally, I am not from Long Island, so I can only speak for myself, but in my opinion, Trump on the Ocean sounds like a bad idea. Jones beach is already a big tourist destination and such a restaurant would only bring more traffic. Furthermore, to me it sounds as if Trump has big plans for this 76,000-square-foot restaurant. In fact, it sounds as if he wants it to be the main attraction of Jones beach, when really, the beach should be the main attraction. (Newsday 3/5/08, p. A6)
