Hilary Rodham Clinton is back in the delegate race after breaking her 29-day losing streak against Barack Obama. Losing the past 11 primaries, Ohio and Texas were crucial wins for her, making this the most important news story of the week. Although the wins will definitely give her campaign a boost of momentum, it will barely affect Obama’s 100-plus delegate lead. The results may be due to Clinton’s recent criticisms on Obama’s national security record and his positions on NAFTA that she has most recently been pushing. Either way, these primaries have been outrageously unpredictable.
Proximity is definitely a key element in this story. People across the world are interested in these results because it will have an effect on everyone in the 2008 presidential election. Timeliness is also significant because the wins of the Ohio and Texas primaries were crucial for Clinton, and had she not have won, it is unsure what would have happened. Therefore, human interest is another news element. (Newsday, 3/5/08, p. A4)
The most interesting story of the week was about a 10-year-old girl from Patchogue, Caitlin Corrigan-Orosco. For the past two months, Caitlin has been getting in touch with numerous citizens and asking them to vote in the Super Tuesday primaries. According to local democrats, she is Hilary Rodham Clinton’s youngest volunteer in New York. Home-schooled by her mother, Caitlin quickly became interested with politics while studying government back in September. Caitlin will not be capable of voting in a presidential election until 2016; however, Long Island politicos have already said they will take on the intelligent child for their own campaigns.
