After Tuesday’s election John McCain won the Republican nomination for president. 1,191 was the total number of delegates needed to win and after Tuesday McCain was the clear winner with 1,269. Mike Huckabee finished the race with a total of 260 delegates. However the real story was that After Hillary Clinton’s big win of Ohio the Democratic race is closer than ever. Clinton stole 56% percent of the votes in Ohio and just passed by with 50% of the votes in Texas. These were to two big states to win in Tuesday’s election. Clinton also got 48% in Rhode Island and Barack Obama won 60% of the votes in Vermont. These were the four states that had there say in who will be able to run for president on Tuesday. Obama now leads with1,397 delegates but Clinton is following very close behind with 1,281. Once again the numbers are too close to call and there is no need for either candidate to back out of the race.
This story holds a lot of prominence and impact for the citizens of our country. Now that the race seems to be close to finish, aside from the fact that it’s still too close to call, people are starting to think about an “Obama-McCain showdown”. People are thinking about Obama’s level of experience if he has to compete for the presidency against John McCain who has 50 years of public service under his belt. (3/5/08 pages A2-5).
The story I enjoyed the most was reading about the family in Amityville who were able to escape from a horrible fire in their house. The two daughters of the family escaped from the second floor of the house, one from jumping out of her second floor bedroom window the other who escaped from the porch roof with help from the neighbor. The neighbor, police officer Joseph Slack, was woken up by the blaze and quickly helped the family. The family is okay and the only injuries were with the daughter who broke three bones in her leg from jumping out of the window. The house sustained and extreme amount of damage but the frame is still standing. The family is receiving a large amount of help from the community. (3/4/08 page A4).
