Just when Barack Obama supporters thought it was okay to say he was the clear cut victor among the Democratic party, Hillary Clinton wins huge in Texas and Ohio. These victories come as a huge morale booster to the Clinton campaign, as she absolutely needed the two states to claim victory. Clinton has made it clear that she would not go down without a fight, and although it only complicates matters going into the Democratic National Convention, it appears that other Democrats are behind her. John McCain also predictably claimed victories over his competition. However, the nationwide support for McCain seems to be greater than it once was thought to be. While the battle between a young, fresh Democrat and an older well known Republican seemed to be a battle that would have been won by the former, some people are starting to shift towards McCain, worrying that Obama can't stand up to the power that McCain has established over the years.
I find this story to be the most important of the week because it seems for the first time in several weeks that Barack Obama is hitting a curb so to speak. While he has been on a roll with victories, and overcoming attempts to knock him off his high horse, the turban picture for example, it seems that now people are becoming slightly skeptical about Obama's capability to lead the country. While I personally disagree and feel Obama has exactly what is necessary to lead the country, I do see the points made by these skeptics. Also, I find the sudden resurgence of Clinton to be interesting, since she has been on the negative side of the press recently. This election is getting to be very interesting and I believe as the days go on it will only become more fun to take part in. (Newsday, 3/5, Newsday.com)
My personal favorite story of the week was the brief article regarding Patrick Swayze's pancreatic cancer. I find this article to be interesting for many reasons, the most important being that many other media sources claimed Swayze has only 5 weeks to live, while Newsday has shown that this is completely untrue. Being a fan of such Swayze classics as 'Road House' I was pleased to hear that the cancer is small, and is easily treatable. In fact, he is still working on some projects during his treatment. I am glad to see Swayze fight through this, just like he has fought many people on screen. (Newsday, 3/6 p. A12)
