Sen. Hillary Clinton (NY) saw the bright light at the end of the tunnel this week as her campaign claimed two key primaries. Wins in Ohio and Texas boosted Clinton’s campaign back into the race, which has in recent weeks has been dominated by Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.). Trailing now by only 105 total delegates, she inches her way back into the competition. Clinton also boasts that with Republican candidate Mike Huckabee’s (Ark.) recent drop from the election, Democratic voters will now take the primaries more seriously because they know that whoever wins must run against John McCain. In addition, many political analysts predict that Clinton could still pull a win out of her campaign. This is not the only step Clinton has made with media this week. With the possibility of her winning the primaries becoming much more realistic than in previous weeks, rumors that she might offer to share her ticket with Obama in the instance of a win have been flying.
The first element of news in the story is prominence. All of the candidates have very high profile names right now, as well as participating in a very prominent event. The result the primaries has a large impact on who will be elected as the next President of the United States. It also has impact, and perhaps oddity, because of the rumors of a shared Democratic ticket between Obama and Clinton, despite the mudslinging between the two campaigns. The article has timeliness due to the campaigns still being underway. Proximity is obvious due to the fact that most readers of NewsDay live inside the United States (NewsDay, 03/06/08, p. A6-7).
The most interesting article this week for me was the article on a photograph taken in 1888 of Helen Keller with her teacher Anne Sullivan. The picture was taken on a family vacation to Cape Cod and is believed to be one of the earliest pictures of the two taken. It is also the first and possibly only image in which Keller has a doll. This adds a pleasant touch to the photograph because the first word Sullivan taught Keller to sign was “doll.” I find this story to be interesting because it sheds new light on a well known personality. Also, being an anthropology/archaeology major, this would be an exciting addition to anyone working to find out more about Keller’s life. The picture was found in a large donation to the New England Historic Genealogical Society by the Thaxter Spencer family, who subsequently vacationed with the Kellers in Massachusetts. The New England Historical Genealogical Society is an organization dedicated to the study and preservation of artifacts from New England families (NewsDay, 03/06/08, p. A23).
