Sen. Hillary Clinton ended her losing streak in the Democratic primaries on Tuesday by winning the primaries in Ohio, Texas, and Rhode Island. Sen. Barack Obama won the primary in Vermont and is still in the lead with 1,443 delegates. Clinton's victory allows her to still have a chance in the election with 1,351 delegates. Clinton was so cheerful, she suggested Obama be her running mate. Sen. John McCain won the required 1,191 delegates in the Republican primaries, forcing his rival Mike Huckabee to drop out. With the Republican candidate chosen, the real battle is between Clinton and Obama.
This story has prominence because it involves the election of the United States president in November. Since the state of the election is constantly evolving, timeliness is an important element to this story. Conflict is another because the Obama-Clinton rivalry has just gotten closer and the Huckabee supporters just lost their candidate. (Newsday, 3/5/08, A2&A4)
The most interesting story this week for me was an explaination of what we can learn from all of the deaths from active child protective services cases. 187 children statewide died in 2006 while their parents were being investigated. It is sad that these children have died, but even sadder that they weren't taken away in time. The main problem is there are too many cases per social worker. This is a human interest story because it brings attention to neglected children. (Newsday, 3/3/08, A8)
